A farmer was arrested on Monday for allegedly beating up three traffic officers in Ventersdorp, the North West public safety department said.

The 52-year-old man apparently attacked three female officers at a roadblock on the R30 between Ventersdorp and Derby, spokesperson Lesolang Simon Mmope said in a statement.

They discovered his licence disc had expired in 2007, and asked him to get out of his car so that they could fine him. The farmer allegedly punched the officers and drove off. They called for back-up and he was caught about a kilometre away.

He was arrested and charged with obstructing a traffic officer in the performance of her duties, and assault.

The three officers were admitted to the Ventersdorp provincial hospital. The farmer was expected to appear in the town's magistrate's court on Tuesday.
