Two robbers were shot and wounded on Sunday afternoon during a business robbery in Protea Glen, Soweto, Gauteng police said.
Three men in a blue Toyota Conquest went to Dr Iyanda Zulu's surgery, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubele said.
Two of them went inside under the pretext of seeing the doctor. They left and a plain-clothes policeman who had come for a consult noticed something was amiss. He called for back-up from an off-duty colleague.
"When the suspects went back they held everyone at gunpoint and told patients to lie down."
The tied up and blindfolded the doctor. While carrying medicine and the doctor's laptop to their car they found two officers and the men's driver waiting for them. When the officers told them to put their hands up, they started shooting. The officers returned fire, hitting one man in the stomach and leg.
"The other one was shot in the buttocks, and the bullet went through his body and came out through his genitals."
The gunmen were taken to a local hospital under police guard. The driver was arrested. All three would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court soon facing a charge of business robbery.
Makhubele said it was the second time that Zulu's surgery had been robbed in the past two weeks. Another two surgeries in Protea Glen were robbed at around the same time. Investigations were continuing to determine if the three could be linked to these crimes as well.
