A crane has now arrived at the Monate Game Farm to help with Operation Save the Hippo in Limpopo.
The hippo has been stuck in a swimming pool for three days and rescue teams are now preparing to hoist the animal to safety.
Rescue personnel are waiting on a local game capturing company and a veterinarian, before they begin the mammoth task of rescuing the animal using a crane.
The operation will cost around R40 000.
According to conservationists, the hippo will be relocated to a nearby farm.
But eBlockwatch has warned there is still a chance the five-year-old mammal may die during the rescue operation.
Meanwhile, a two-year-old hippo calf is on the loose in Cape Town.
It is believed the animal moved out of Rondevlei and into the Strandfontein Birding Area, before moving into Zeekoevlei while attempting to return to its home pod.
The public is advised to exercise caution, as hippos are known to be extremely dangerous animals.
