An electrical substation is on fire in Roodepoort, on the West Rand on Monday morning.
Firefighters from the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services are battling the blaze at the substation on Van Wyk Street.
Spokesperson Synock Matobako said there was a delay in the rescue mission because City Power had to be called to open the station.
The body of a suspected cable thief was also found at the burning station.
Rescue workers suspect the man was electrocuted while trying to steal cables at the station.
Meanwhile, parts of Roodepoort and Weltevreden Park have been left without power as a result of the blaze.
The outage also affected peak-time traffic in the areas, as traffic lights are out of order.
City Power spokesperson Sicelo Xulu said the power utility was working to restore electricity to the area.
He added that technicians would remain at the scene until power was restored.
