A man was arrested for hijacking a bread truck in Alexandra on Monday, Johannesburg police said.
Captain Pinky Tsinyane said two armed men approached a bread delivery truck at the Pan Africa business district.
"The men ordered two of the four occupants to board at the back of the truck while they sat with the driver and his assistant at the front seats," Tsinyane said.
While on their way to the back of the truck, the two assistants signalled the metro police officials who were nearby about a hijacking in progress.
Metro police followed the truck after it had left the business premises and forced it off the road at the corner of 13th and Louis Botha avenues.
Tsinyane said a chase ensued after the robbers jumped out of the truck and fled on foot.
"One of the robbers pulled out a 9mm and start shooting at the police. They returned fire and injured him in the upper body," she said.
The other robber fled with an undisclosed amount of money.
Police confiscated a 9mm pistol, a chisel and a hammer upon searching the wounded man.
He was taken to hospital under police guard.
The man was expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court to face charges of hijacking, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
