Two alleged armed robbers were arrested after being beaten up by residents in Kagiso on the West Rand, police said on Monday.
Brigadier Sipho Ngubane said three men attacked a couple, using a broken beer bottle and knives, shortly before midnight on Sunday.
"The suspects demanded cash and cellphones. The man eventually surrendered his cellphone but screamed for help thereafter," said Ngubane.
Residents responded to the screams and caught two of the men while the third managed to escape.
Police were alerted and found the two men severely injured.
"They were taken to the local hospital and later taken back into police custody after treatment," said Ngubane.
The men were expected to appear in Kagiso Magistrate's Court soon.
