A man who killed a police officer was sentenced to life in prison by the High Court in Durban on Thursday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Elvis Luvuyo Shasha (23) got 15 years for armed robbery with aggravating circumstances and life for the murder, Colonel Vincent Mdunge said.

Shasha shot constables Ajith Krashnlal and Gerome Mngoma while running from a KFC he had robbed with Mduduzi Dlamini (42) in Pinetown on 7 October.

Krashnlal died in hospital. Mngoma was seriously injured.

Dlamini was scheduled to make a formal bail application in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on Monday. A third suspect was being sought.

KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the sentencing.

"This sentence will send a strong message to those criminals who kill our police officers... we hope that the second suspect will soon face the judge to answer for his acts."
