The South African Police Service (SAPS) on Friday said it would be taking internal action following Hawks spokesperson McIntosh Polela's tweet about musician Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye's jail sentence.

Polela tweeted on Wednesday that, “I trust that Jub Jub’s supporters gave him a jar of Vaseline to take to prison."

Maarohanye and his co-accused Themba Tshabalala have been found guilty of several charges including murder for a 2010 accident in which four school pupils were killed in Soweto.

The police's Tumi Shai said the SAPS is unhappy about the tweet which Polela has since retracted and apologised for.

“We don't condone rape issues, not now and not even in the issue. The SAPS will handle the issue internally.

Many people criticised Polela for making a joke about rape in a country where there is a high rape rate.

The Centre for Constitutional Rights condemned Polela saying his utterances were frightening and reckless.
