A traffic officer was due to appear in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of soliciting a bribe, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said.

He allegedly pocketed a bribe from a motorist during an alcohol blitz operation that took place in Alexandra, Johannesburg, on Saturday, RTMC spokesman Ashref Ismail said.

"The motorist was arrested, and he complained about why he was arrested despite having paid a bribe," said Ismail.

He told police he had handed a R200 note to one traffic officer. Police searched the officer and the R200 note was found on him. He was arrested.

"It remains extremely worrying that the people who are supposed to uphold the rule of law are the ones who tamper with it. We will not hesitate to act, even against one of our own," said Ismail.
