More than 600 people have been killed in road accidents since the beginning of December, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said on Tuesday.
The corporation said there had been 564 accidents resulting in 676 deaths from 1 to 18 December.
"Comparison with previous year fatalities cannot be done at this stage as all crash reports have not been captured and also because South Africa now follows the 30-day World Health Organisation standard for fatalities," said spokesperson Ashref Ismail.
