A Uitenhage tavern owner was held up at gunpoint and robbed of a large amount of cash in the early hours of Monday morning, Eastern Cape police said.
"The owner was asleep when two men forced opened the kitchen door and entered his house in Mzamane Street [in Kwanobuhle]," said Lt-Col Priscilla Naidu.
She said the men demanded money from the tavern owner, whose business was attached to his house.
They then fled with a large amount of cash and the man's cellphone.
Naidu said tavern owners should not keep substantial amounts of money on their premises.
"Criminals are aware that banking institutions will be closed for Christmas and New Year's, and that tavern owners will be keeping money in their houses."
