Some Khayelitsha residents are demanding that education officials provide them with a school of their own.
Community members from Zwelitsha informal settlement say they have not been able to place their children at nearby schools because they are full.
Up to 400 children are yet to be enrolled.
The province started the new school year on Wednesday with six new schools.
Residents together with their children are currently meeting with education officials.
Some of the children are already dressed in uniforms hoping the department will assist in securing them a placement.
Earlier, officials issued forms to be completed by the desperate parents but whether the children will be enrolled at other local schools is unclear.
Their parents however insist the only solution to this problem is the provision of their own school.
