Singer Steve Hofmeyr underwent an emergency operation on Monday evening at a Gauteng hospital for a perforated colon, his blog confirmed on Tuesday.
Hofmeyr was on Tuesday currently under observation in an intensive care unit where his progress was being monitored by a specialist.
"Steve is currently fairly stable following a laparoscopy, but his condition is serious and I want to keep him under the skilled care of the hospital's staff for at least another week before I'll consider discharging him. After that I expect him to be out of action for another three to four weeks to recuperate fully," his doctor said.
Hofmeyr's wife, Natasha, who was at his side at the hospital during the night, said he looked a little better on Tuesday morning, but that he was still quite weak.
"Steve is very worried about the impact that his emergency procedure will have on his programme. He doesn't want to postpone any of his shows and by doing so let his clients and supporters down. But this time it's not just we as his management team that has to put our foot down, but his body and the doctor as well," she added.
Hofmeyr and his management, Bigheart Productions, has apologised for being forced to postpone shows and has promised to attempt to reschedule clients as soon as they know when Hofmeyr will be able to resume his programme.
