The Gauteng education and health departments are being sued for giving a nine-year-old girl a cervical cancer vaccine without her mother's permission.
According to The Sowetan, the little girl was sent home from school after she started vomiting and had diarrhoea after she was given the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine.
The girl reportedly spent a week in hospital.
The mother of the nine-year-old said that she had not returned the letter of consent for the vaccine to be administered to the school.
The HPV vaccination campaign was launched nationally in March by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi. Grade 4 girls were chosen for the campaign because, according to the minister, it was best to vaccinate before HPV became a concern.
The lawyer representing the mother and daughter confirmed that the legal action had been instituted but the departments had yet to receive the summons.
