ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema has told President Jacob Zuma that the youth's votes "were not cheap".

The firebrand leader has reminded Zuma that the government needs to deliver on pre-election promises, particularly to the youth.

"We voted for President Zuma. We say to the president: we no longer want squatter camps. We want houses which have water and electricity. We say to President Zuma: our votes were not cheap, they were expensive," Malema said, according to the Cape Times.

"He must pay us by giving us free education until (the) first degree... by giving us quality jobs... we mean proper salaries and better working conditions," he continued.

Malema also revealed his view that increasing salaries in certain sectors would have a positive effect on efficiency.

"Doctors are paid less than a receptionist at a municipal council. Teachers should not use their salaries to abuse alcohol. Once police are paid properly, they will no longer accept (bribes)."

Malema also lashed out at the predecessor of the newly-launched National Youth Development Agency, insisting it was "useless" and that it "served friends, boyfriends and girlfriends of those who occupied positions".
