ANCYL leader Julius Malema was "the people's favourite" to win the Drama Queen category of the Feather Awards.

"He was the people's favourite right from the beginning. Everyone thought that Julius was going to win even before the nominations," Thami Kotlolo, spokesperson for the Feather Awards, told the Cape Times.

But Malema was not happy about the nomination from the gay community.

"I am not a queen because a queen refers to a woman. I'm a man so why include me in that category?" Malema apparently asked a journalist.

In response to the firebrand leader's rant, his nomination was withdrawn.

"We really were not trying to offend. He is a news maker and to gays that means you are a drama queen," explained Kotlolo.

"But we do respect his wishes so we have withdrawn his nomination."
