Kempton Park and many of its surrounds were without power on Wednesday after vandals damaged the area's substation, the local council said.

"Preliminary investigations indicate that somebody threw an object at the insulators causing damage to the circuit breaker which resulted in the power failure," said Zweli Dlamini, spokesman for the Ekurhuleni metro municipality.

The central business district, Aston Manor, Glen Marais, Bonaero Park, Van Riebeeck Park, the whole industrial area of Spartan, Cresslawn, Norkem Park and surrounding areas lost power just after 8.30am.

Engineers were hoping to have power restored by noon but in the meantime, motorists were urged to treat intersections as stop streets until robots were working again.

Dlamini said the metro condemned such acts of violence and apologised for the inconvenience.
