A 26-year-old Eskom security guard was shot dead at the power station's Polokwane plant, Limpopo police said on Monday.

Captain Mohlaka Mashiane said the victim and another security guard were on duty at the Polokwane Matlala Road power station on Sunday when they were confronted by two armed men.

"The suspects instructed the guards to hand over their weapons and proceeded to search one guard," said Mashiane.

"While the suspects were busy with that, the second guard tried to run off and he was shot in the back."

The guard collapsed and died at the scene.

Police said the men fled without taking anything.

"We believe their motive was to rob the guards of their weapons," said Mashiane.

No arrests had been made yet and police asked anyone with information to contact the Polokwane police on 015 296 7000.
