Judge Meyer Joffe will inform the High Court in Johannesburg on Friday whether he will recuse himself from former top cop Jackie Selebi's corruption case.
"I'd like to thank counsel. I'm sure it wasn't easy to argue. It certainly wasn't easy to listen to," Joffe said on Thursday after hearing arguments for and against his recusal.
Joffe adjourned court until 11.30am on Friday.
Defence lawyer Jaap Cilliers said Selebi perceived Joffe's, at times, "hostile" and "rude manner" as showing a pro-State bias.
The State opposed the defence's application, saying its argument was weak.
"There is just no reason for the court to recuse itself," prosecutor Gerrie Nel said.
On Thursday, Joffe appeared to go through a range of emotions from infuriation and anxiety to being accommodating to the defence's arguments.
At one stage he said the application was "very difficult... because it goes to my very essence".
If Joffe did recuse himself, the trial would have to start from scratch with a new presiding officer. If he stays and court proceedings resume, State witness Glenn Agliotti's cross-examination will continue.
Selebi is facing a charge of corruption and another of defeating the ends of justice in connection with at least R1.2-million he allegedly received from convicted drug trafficker Agliotti and others in return for favours.
