The Christian Democratic Party called on President Jacob Zuma to
resign on Monday, following a report that he had fathered a child
out of wedlock.
"Mr President, please resign for the good of the country!" the
party said in a statement.
This came after neither the ANC nor the presidency were prepared
to comment on the report in the Sunday Times.
"Our country needs a leader acting as a moral compass, not a
president imitating Tiger Woods, Bill Clinton and King Henry VIII
all in one, and all for the wrong reasons."
Reverend Theunis Botha, leader of the CDP and acting chair of
the Christian Democratic Alliance, said Zuma's justifying his
polygamist unions as part of his Zulu culture was "an insult to the
Zulus, as are his claims that his sexcapades are in line with his
declaration of being a Christian".
"Whilst Zuma apparently finds enough time for a love life not
matched by many, political analysts are increasingly claiming that
Zuma is an absent president offering no leadership to the country.
"As we are leading up to the World Soccer Cup Tournament the
eyes of the world are on South Africa, and the mockery of our
presidency is the last thing we need."
