A suicide bomber blew himself up at a a legislator's house in central Pakistan on Monday, killing seven people and wounding more than 50, while the MP himself survived, police said.

The attacker struck at the house of Rashid Akbar Nowani, an MP from the party of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, in the town of Bhakkar in Punjab province, police said.

"It was a suicide attack, the head of the bomber has been recovered. At least seven people were killed," senior police officer Khadim Hussain told AFP.

"The bomber walked up to the MP's house and detonated himself in the midst of a crowd of party workers, supporters and relatives," Hussain said.

The local hospital had received 53 injured people, some in serious condition, doctor Chaudhry Ahsan-ul-haq said, without giving a final death toll.

"It is a crisis situation here," the doctor added.

The blast comes four days after a suicide bomber detonated explosives outside the house of a prominent member of Pakistan's ruling coalition in a northwestern town, killing four people.

Pakistan's new civilian government is fighting a wave of Taliban and al-Qaeda violence, including suicide bombings.
