The news editor of Zambia's independent Post newspaper was arrested on Monday on charges of circulating pornography, over an unpublished photo of a woman giving birth.
Chansa Kabwela turned herself into police, who interrogated her for one hour over the photo that never appeared in the paper but which Kabwela gave to Zambian women's groups and to the vice president's office.
"She has been charged and arrested for circulating obscene pictures and I hope she will appear in court tomorrow. We are working on modalities to secure her bond," Post lawyer Sam Mujuda told AFP.
Kabwela, clad in blue jeans and a brown jersey, looked calm and composed as she was led to the police cells.
The picture showed a woman giving birth without medical assistance during a national doctors' strike last month. The new mother's family brought the picture to the paper, and Kabwela passed it to local women's groups and the office of Vice President George Kunda.
President Rupiah Banda was angered by the image, and during a news conference last month ordered police to arrest the person responsible for the picture.
