Dutch police shot dead an escaped kangaroo on Thursday after attempts to dart the animal on a busy highway failed, a local traffic official said.

The drama outside the central city of Utrecht started when motorists spotted the marsupial hopping on the side of the multi-lane freeway, said Rene Passet of the Dutch Motoring Federation (ANWB), tasked with traffic safety.

"Police were called out. First they tried to dart it but it did not work, forcing them to shoot with live ammunition, killing the kangaroo," Passet said, adding that part of the highway was blocked off during the operation.

The escaped kangaroo belonged to a private owner living nearby, said Passet.

The highway was reopened to traffic an hour later.
