Chris has strengthened to become the Atlantic Ocean's first hurricane of the season as it churned in waters far from land, US monitors said on Thursday.
The Miami-based National Hurricane Centre said the storm's top winds had jumped to 120km per hour as it moved to the northeast at 32km per hour.
