A gunman was killed on Friday after wounding at least six people just outside the Empire State Building, one of New York's biggest tourist attractions, a police source said.
"As far as I know there is one dead and six civilians wounded," the officer, who asked not to be identified, said.
NY1 television reported that as many as eight people had been shot and that one of the shooter's victims had also died, while CNN reported as many as 10 people shot.
The New York Police Department would only say "there are people who were shot near the Empire State Building."
A fire department spokesperson said it received an emergency call at 9.07am and "we're at the scene, evaluating patients."
Several blocks around the site of the shooting were closed to vehicles, causing rush hour traffic snarls.
